Iberia can accept eligible ordinary pets in the cabin or aircraft hold, with cargo as the alternative when the animal cannot use those passenger-flight modes. Test both the outward and return journeys before paying: species, total cabin weight, carrier size, hold breed rule, operating airline, aircraft capacity and government documents must all fit. Acceptance on one flight does not approve the other.

Build an outward-and-return animal sheet
Open the Iberia pets page and write one row for every flight. Include the operating airline, aircraft, date, species, breed, animal weight, carrier weight and external dimensions. Add the requested mode and current response. Iberia states that permission is granted only when all flights in the booking have been confirmed, so an unresolved connection keeps the whole animal plan open.

Cabin acceptance is an eight-kilogram calculation
Iberia currently accepts eligible dogs, cats, ornamental fish, tortoises and permitted birds in the cabin when the animal and carrier together do not exceed eight kilograms. The carrier limit is 45 x 35 x 25 cm, with the three dimensions totaling no more than 105 cm. The animal remains inside the carrier throughout the flight and is under the passenger’s care.
Weigh the loaded carrier and verify that the animal can remain in it naturally. Use the airline pet carrier measurement guide to preserve the actual numbers. A bag can pass the dimension arithmetic and still fail when it is not safe, secure, ventilated or large enough for the animal.
Hold travel is controlled by aircraft, container and breed
Dogs and cats may use the hold when Iberia accepts the flight and container, except for categories the airline excludes from this mode. The carrier must be resistant, safe, ventilated and large enough for the animal to stand naturally, turn and lie down. Aircraft types limit the number and size of hold containers, so provide exact dimensions before treating the route as available.
Iberia does not transport snub-nosed dogs and cats in the hold because of their higher heat and breathing risk. That does not create an automatic cabin approval. Recheck cabin weight and fit, or ask Iberia for the current cargo route. Record the official breed decision rather than selecting a different label from a booking menu.
Request and payment do not happen through one universal channel
For eligible cabin dogs, cats, tortoises and birds, Iberia may offer the pet option during ticket purchase. A later addition, ornamental fish or a hold request can require prior permission through a Booking Office, with payment at the airport for the instructed cases. Ask which service element identifies the animal and which flights it covers.
Save that response with the pet reservation confirmation check. A charge receipt without a matching animal service, or a request without confirmed capacity, is not a closed booking. Repeat the comparison after any schedule or operator change.
A partner-operated flight owns its animal rule
Read the operating carrier shown for each sector, not only the Iberia flight number on the ticket. A partner can use different cabin species, weights, carrier dimensions, hold availability or booking channels. Ask Iberia how the request is passed to the partner and obtain confirmation that names the partner flight. If that cannot be documented, choose an itinerary whose animal chain can be confirmed.
When cargo is the remaining route, identify the booking party and cargo terminal before buying the passenger ticket. Record the air-waybill or shipment reference, tender deadline, kennel acceptance, destination agent, customs owner and collection payment. The traveller and animal may use related flights while following different check-in, custody and release processes. Ask who monitors water, feeding and a missed connection, and give the consignee the active shipment reference before custody begins. Save the cargo station hours and identification required from the collector.
EU paperwork and airline carriage close different gates
Iberia notes that pet travel between EU member states requires the applicable passport and health records. A non-EU origin or destination can require another health certificate, permit, inspection or arrival route. Check the country authority for departure, transit, destination and return, then match the microchip, rabies record, owner and dates with the actual itinerary.
Use the EU pet travel document check for the government path. An Iberia agent may inspect the documents before carriage, but the airline cannot certify entry. A valid pet passport or health certificate also does not reserve cabin or hold capacity.
Recognised assistance dogs use a separate Iberia process
Do not submit a recognised assistance dog as an ordinary pet merely because the ordinary-pet form is easier to find. The Iberia assistance-dog page describes its own advance request, accreditation and route-specific requirements. An emotional-support label or an ordinary pet’s training history does not by itself establish that the dog qualifies for that process.
Repair the failed layer before returning to the airport
A cabin overweight result may require another safe mode or flight; a hold breed restriction needs cabin or cargo review; an aircraft capacity failure needs another flight; a partner refusal belongs to that operator; a certificate mismatch returns to its issuer; and a missing reservation returns to Iberia’s booking owner. Do not solve one failure by hiding a measurement or relabelling the animal.
The final sheet should make the outward and return rows agree with the physical animal, carrier, airline confirmations and government documents. It records a checked plan, not a guarantee of boarding, border entry, capacity after an aircraft change or fitness on the day.
