For a TAP Air Portugal pet booking, first confirm that TAP operates every flight, then ask which transport mode TAP will accept for the animal and loaded carrier on those exact segments. A passenger ticket does not reserve pet capacity. Record the accepted mode, carrier measurements, combined weight, price, payment state and airport handoff before treating the trip as workable.
Official pages checked August 26, 2026: TAP traveling-with-pets page, IATA Traveler’s Pet Corner. TAP limits, prices, aircraft acceptance and country instructions can change, so verify the live page and the operating flights again before payment and departure.
Start with the airline that actually operates each flight
The TAP pet page states that its information applies to flights operated by TAP Air Portugal. Open the itinerary and copy the operating carrier shown under every flight number, including connections and the return. If another carrier operates a leg, ask both airlines whether the animal can complete that transfer and who holds the pet reservation.
Use the codeshare pet booking check when the ticket carries a TAP flight number but names a partner below it. TAP acceptance does not establish acceptance by a partner flight, ground handler or transfer airport for the same animal and container.
Choose cabin, hold or cargo from the current route facts
Give TAP the animal species, number, age, breed, total loaded weight and carrier type and dimensions. Add origin, destination, transfer airports, flight dates and aircraft when known. TAP uses those facts to decide whether the request belongs in the cabin, the aircraft hold or a cargo channel. Do not choose a mode from a blog summary or from what worked on an earlier flight.
| Possible channel | Evidence to obtain | Reason it can still fail |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin | Accepted request tied to each operating segment and the loaded carrier facts | Seat area, aircraft capacity, route or animal eligibility can differ |
| Aircraft hold | Confirmed hold booking, current container conditions and delivery point | Aircraft, breed, weather, connection or station handling can block acceptance |
| Cargo | Current cargo booking route, station pair, shipper instructions and collection plan | A passenger reservation is not a cargo booking or air waybill |
Measure the loaded carrier before asking for space
Measure the carrier on the outside and weigh it with the animal and all items that will remain inside. The IATA traveler page explains that an animal must be able to stand, turn and lie naturally in an appropriately sized container, while the airline retains its own acceptance procedure. A label claiming that a carrier is airline approved does not guarantee TAP acceptance.
For a cabin request, compare the current TAP dimensions with the real bag after it is shaped and loaded. The carry-on carrier measurement guide shows how to record length, width, height and loaded weight without confusing internal space with the outer limit. For hold or cargo, ask for the current construction, ventilation, door and wheel rules.
Give TAP one complete request instead of scattered questions
- Provide the booking reference and every operating flight, including the return.
- State species, breed, age, animal count and whether the traveler owns the pet.
- Provide exterior carrier dimensions, carrier type and total loaded weight.
- Ask for the accepted mode, price, payment channel, check-in point and reporting time.
- Request a dated response or case reference that identifies the covered flight segments.
The general airline pet reservation guide can help you capture the reply, but the controlling answer must come from TAP for the booked itinerary. A note that the request was received is weaker than a response that names capacity, mode and each flight.
Keep the quoted price beside the capacity answer
Ask whether the quoted amount covers one flight, one direction or the full itinerary, and whether it changes with the booking channel, travel date, route or loaded weight. Save the currency, collection point, refund condition and service description. A price quote does not hold pet space, while a capacity response does not show that the required charge has been paid. Join both records to the same animal and operating segments.
Route changes reopen the acceptance decision
A new date, flight number, operator, aircraft, airport or connection time can change the pet result even when the passenger ticket remains valid. Compare every revised itinerary with the saved TAP response. Ask TAP to reconfirm affected segments and reissue any payment or service evidence that still points to a canceled flight.
Keep airline acceptance separate from border permission
TAP decides whether it will carry the animal under its transport conditions. Government authorities decide whether the animal may leave, transit and enter. Build a second file for identification, vaccines, tests, permits and the required health certificate. An airline confirmation does not mean that border documents are complete, and a valid certificate does not reserve airline capacity.
Read the airport handoff back before travel day
Ask where the carrier must be presented, how early the animal must arrive, who inspects it, which documents must be physical, and where the animal is collected after landing or during a long transfer. Keep the case reference, payment receipt and current itinerary together. A companion should know the backup collection plan if the animal cannot travel.
Trace custody through a connection
For each transfer, ask whether the animal remains with the airline, moves between handlers, must be collected, or needs a fresh check-in. Record the minimum connection time and the terminal used for the animal rather than the passenger gate alone. If the pet must enter the country during transfer, reopen the border file and add the time needed for inspection, ground transport and reacceptance.
If check-in staff cannot find the pet acceptance
Show the segment-specific TAP response and ask staff to locate the service without arguing from an old policy screenshot. If the animal, container, aircraft or documents fail the live check, request the exact reason and the office that can correct it. Do not move the animal to another mode without a new booking. Use a safe waiting place and a named collector while TAP and the relevant authority resolve the record.
