Finnair Pet Policy: Cabin, Cargo, Carrier and Booking Check

Finnair can carry some pets in the cabin, some in the aircraft hold and others only as cargo. The right mode depends on the species, where the journey starts, the operating airline, destination, travel class and combined animal-and-container weight. Classify those facts before adding a pet to a booking. A paid travel extra cannot override an aircraft, country or physical carrier restriction.

Rules checked August 26, 2026: Finnair, Finnair. Reconfirm the operating airline, aircraft, cabin, country route and loaded weight before check-in opens. Recheck after any animal, itinerary, operator or date change.

Species and origin choose the first Finnair lane

The Finnair pets-on-flights page currently allows cats and dogs from EU and non-EU origins in the cabin or hold when all conditions are met. Rabbits, tortoises and hedgehogs use those passenger-flight modes only when the journey starts in the EU, while ferrets travel in the hold. Other species go as cargo. Write the species, origin and destination before comparing weight.

Some countries and routes, including examples named on the Finnair page, require cargo even when the animal would otherwise fit a passenger-flight mode. Ask whether the country rule changes only the transport channel or also the import process. Do not book a cabin place and plan to solve a cargo-only destination later.

Combined weight separates cabin, hold and cargo

Finnair modeCurrent weight boundaryPhysical test
CabinPet and carrier together no more than 8 kgClosed carrier fits under the correct seat and the pet stands and lies naturally
Hold on Finnair-operated flightPet and container together no more than 75 kgAircraft accepts the required rigid container size
Hold on Norra-operated flightPet and container together no more than 50 kgNorra aircraft and container limits are confirmed
CargoAbove the relevant hold limit or another cargo-only caseForwarder confirms shipment, tender and destination release

Weigh the ready-to-travel animal and container, not an empty bag. Use the cargo versus accompanied-baggage decision guide when a limit or destination moves the animal outside the passenger booking. Cargo is a separate shipment with a forwarding company, cargo terminal and destination collection process.

The operating airline and cabin determine how to add the pet

A Finnair-marketed ticket may contain Finnair, Norra, Jettime or another airline operation. On Jettime, only cats and dogs are accepted in the cabin and carrier limits may differ. For any partner-operated sector, contact Finnair customer service and obtain the operator-specific animal answer. Store one result per segment rather than one statement for the ticket.

A small pet can usually be added during online booking or through Manage booking while capacity remains. Finnair directs travellers in short-haul Business, long-haul Premium Economy and Jettime operation to customer service. Ordinary pets cannot travel in long-haul Business because the seats lack the required under-seat space. Add the pet before check-in opens.

Cabin fit uses the operator's carrier table

For Finnair-operated flights, the current published maximum for a soft cabin carrier is 55 x 40 x 23 cm and for a hard carrier is 35 x 30 x 20 cm. Norra lists a lower height for soft carriers. The carrier needs a solid bottom and suitable ventilation, and it must stay closed under the seat from the gate through the flight. A pet that cannot stand straight and lie comfortably can be refused even when the bag measures correctly.

Record the animal and loaded bag with the airline carrier-size check. If two eligible animals share one cabin carrier, the combined total still has to stay within the published weight and fit rules. Do not compress the carrier to obtain a smaller measurement while the pet is inside.

Hold travel needs an aircraft-specific container answer

For a larger dog or an eligible ferret, ask for the hold acceptance on every operating flight and provide the loaded container weight and external dimensions. Finnair’s maximum container size varies by aircraft. Confirm ventilation, rigid construction, secure door, natural standing space, bowls and handling labels, then pay only after the airline ties the animal service to the intended booking.

Put the payment reference beside the animal service, not only in the passenger receipt folder. For cargo, record the forwarding company, shipment reference, cargo terminal, tender deadline, consignee and collection requirements. A Finnair flight number on a proposed cargo route does not tell the passenger where or when the animal changes custody. Ask the forwarder for delay care and missed-connection contacts before tender.

The government file remains the traveller's responsibility

The Finnair conditions of carriage require a properly crated animal with valid health and vaccination certificates, entry permits and other documents required by countries of entry or transit. For travel between EU countries, the Finnair page points to the pet passport rule. Non-EU journeys may require a different certificate and entry process.

Use the EU pet travel rule check for the government lane, then compare the microchip, rabies record, owner, route and dates with the booked journey. Finnair’s counter review is an airline acceptance step, not a government guarantee of entry.

At the airport, expect a desk check rather than online check-in

Finnair directs pet travellers to the airport check-in desk and says online check-in is not available. Staff weigh the animal and carrier, inspect fit and review documents. Bring the booking’s pet confirmation, original government records and the exact container used for the measurements. Do not replace a soft bag or rigid crate after confirmation without repeating the acceptance check.

Rebuild the affected row after a change

An aircraft swap can alter container limits; a new operator changes pet rules; a cabin upgrade can remove under-seat space; a changed country can force cargo; a delayed date can affect documents; and a weight gain can move the pet to another mode. Update the specific row in the trip file and obtain a new confirmation.

The completed Finnair record joins species, origin, mode, loaded weight, operating segment, carrier, documents and pet confirmation. It records the checked plan for one itinerary. It does not guarantee boarding after an aircraft or capacity change, border admission or animal fitness on travel day.
