Use the American pets page for the live passenger rules and American PetEmbark for cargo. Do not plan an ordinary large pet as checked baggage.

Keep these products separate in the file. They use different acceptance staff, terminals, fees, containers, and connection rules. If the carry-on branch fails, ask whether PetEmbark serves the route; do not assume the ticket counter can check the animal like a suitcase.
Build an aircraft-and-seat cabin map
American publishes aircraft, cabin, and seat restrictions for carry-on pets. Copy the operating aircraft and cabin from each segment, then mark whether the selected seat has usable under-seat storage. Bulkheads, exit rows, and some premium-cabin or aircraft configurations can fail even when the soft carrier meets the general published dimensions.

Use the carrier measurement check and ask Reservations about the smallest under-seat envelope in the journey. A recommended soft carrier dimension is a screening value, not permission to over-compress the kennel or place the animal where stowage is prohibited.
Add the carry-on pet and preserve the state change
- Open the final candidate itinerary in the American app or website and identify each operating airline.
- Use Additional Services to add the carry-on pet where available, selecting the covered flights.
- Confirm the pet entry is attached, then record the segment, animal, passenger, and request state.
- At the airport ticket counter, pay the applicable fee and present the animal and kennel for review.
- After any change, verify the ancillary, seat, aircraft, and destination eligibility again.
Payment and capacity are related but distinct records. A fee receipt cannot repair a missing pet entry on the replacement flight; a web confirmation does not waive travel-day fit or document review. Store both with the itinerary version that they cover.
Reconcile the carrier with the passenger's bag allowance
American currently treats the pet carrier as the carry-on pet item and limits what additional bag the passenger may bring. Plan whether the second item is a personal item or overhead carry-on under the live policy. Keep strollers and other equipment in a separate baggage plan so a gate repack does not disturb the pet documents, water plan, or secure carrier.
- Animal fits comfortably inside the fully closed carrier without protruding.
- Soft structure remains secure, padded, water-repellent, and sufficiently ventilated.
- Hard kennel is within the actual aircraft’s under-seat limit, not a fleetwide guess.

Read geography before applying the general cabin rule
American’s pet page publishes route boundaries and special conditions for Hawaii, transatlantic and transpacific travel, particular countries, and dogs entering the United States. Build the itinerary from every airport and country, not broad labels such as ‘international.’ A carry-on pet permitted on one domestic segment may be prohibited on the next segment or at the destination.
Put the government checks in the origin-transit-destination-return worksheet. American decides transport; agriculture, health, customs, and quarantine authorities decide admission and release.
Move to PetEmbark with a clean cargo file
If cabin carriage is impossible, confirm that American Cargo accepts the animal and origin/destination pair. Create shipper and consignee records, ask about booking lead time, station hours, cutoff and collection, crate specifications, document originals, weather restrictions, charges, and the waybill. Keep the official-orders checked exception narrow
American limits checked pets at the passenger counter to specified active-duty military and State Department Foreign Service personnel traveling on official orders. Verify eligibility and the permitted route from the current page; keep the orders and animal documents private and available for review. Family relationship, prior acceptance, or possession of a rigid kennel does not independently create eligibility.
Respect live temperature and breed decisions
Checked and cargo animals can be exposed during ground handling, so American publishes temperature restrictions and animal/container conditions. Record forecast, origin, connection, destination, tender time, and any acclimation evidence the live policy accepts. Ask what happens if the temperature crosses the limit after the passenger has checked in. Do not medicate or sedate to solve an operational restriction; American also publishes a sedation boundary for carry-on animals.

American’s carry-on pet confirmation covers a particular passenger itinerary. It does not create cargo space, checked-pet eligibility, government entry permission, or a guarantee after an aircraft change.
