Southwest currently accepts only small vaccinated domestic cats and dogs in the passenger cabin on eligible domestic trips; it does not offer an ordinary hold or cargo alternative through this pet program. Start with the Southwest pet-policy pathway, call to reserve limited pet space, and keep the carrier under the assigned seat with the animal fully enclosed. Do that before treating a passenger ticket as a workable pet itinerary.
Official routes checked August 26, 2026: Southwest Airlines Help Center, Southwest Airlines Help Center. Reopen the current Southwest Airlines Help Center, Southwest Airlines Help Center material against the operating flight and travel date because acceptance, aircraft, fees, embargoes, and border rules can change.
Run a cabin-only feasibility test before choosing the fare
Write down the origin, destination, date, every flight number, the number and species of animals, and the assembled carrier’s outside dimensions. Then decide whether the entire trip fits Southwest’s cabin program. The current policy pathway excludes international itineraries and flights to or from Hawaii, while destination-specific requirements can still apply elsewhere. A Southwest flight number is not enough when another airline operates a segment; ask which carrier will physically carry the animal.
| Control point | Evidence to obtain | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Eligible domestic itinerary and operating carrier | International or Hawaii segment, or an unverified partner segment |
| Animal | Small vaccinated domestic cat or dog meeting the live age rule | Different species, inadequate fit, or missing health preparation |
| Space | Advance pet reservation attached to the passenger record | Agent cannot confirm pet capacity on a segment |
| Carrier | Closed carrier that fits under the actual seat | Animal cannot remain fully inside or the carrier blocks safe stowage |
Use the operating-carrier check if a confirmation shows another airline. The physical operator decides whether the animal can board its aircraft, and a connection can change both acceptance and the place where the pet must be handed over.
Reserve the pet as a separate capacity item
- Find a candidate itinerary but avoid locking an inflexible fare until the pet route is checked.
- Call Southwest and provide each flight, travel date, animal species, carrier count, and passenger confirmation details.
- Ask the agent to state whether pet space is reserved on every segment, not merely noted as a request.
- Record the call date, confirmation number, affected flights, and any instruction to pay at the airport.
- Recheck the pet entry after a schedule, aircraft, airport, or flight-number change.
The official pathway says space is limited and asks customers to reserve in advance by phone. That makes the airline confirmation the decisive booking record. A passenger seat, boarding position, or payment card hold does not independently establish a pet place. Use the site’s pet reservation guide to distinguish a pending note from a usable confirmation.
Treat the carrier as both containment and cabin baggage
Measure the carrier with its base, seams, wheels, pockets, and handles in travel position. The animal needs to stay entirely inside during the gate period, boarding, the flight, and deplaning. Southwest also treats the carrier as either a personal item or a regular carry-on item, so map the rest of the passenger’s bags before arriving. The carrier-dimensions check gives you a repeatable measurement sheet rather than relying on a product label.
- Photograph the assembled carrier beside a tape measure and keep the model label.
- Confirm that the zippers or latches remain closed and the animal cannot push out its head or tail.
- Test the animal’s ability to settle without forcing the carrier into a shape that defeats ventilation.
- List whether the carrier consumes the personal-item or carry-on allowance, then repack accordingly.
- Do not assume that buying an extra passenger seat converts an oversized pet into an accepted cabin item.
Separate the airport payment from the reservation
The official airport instructions direct customers to the ticket counter to pay the Pet Fare. Keep two states on your checklist: pet capacity confirmed and pet fare paid. A receipt without a valid flight-level reservation is incomplete; a telephone confirmation without the required airport payment is also incomplete. Save both records with the current itinerary.
At security, expect the carrier to be screened separately while you control the animal as instructed. Plan a secure harness or other escape-control method for that handoff. The security procedure is not the airline’s acceptance decision, and passing the checkpoint does not prevent a gate agent from refusing a disruptive animal or an unsuitable carrier.
Build a behavior and containment fallback
Southwest identifies behaviors such as growling, biting, lunging, excessive noise, scratching, or relieving in the cabin or gate area as possible reasons for denial. Practice carrier time before the trip, use a relief area early enough that the flight will not be held, and keep cleaning material in the passenger’s accessible bag. If the animal cannot remain safely enclosed, pause the trip instead of planning to open the carrier after boarding.
| Failure at travel time | Who can resolve it | Practical recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Pet entry missing after a flight change | Southwest reservations | Reconfirm the replacement segments before going to the airport |
| Carrier will not fit or close | Passenger and airline agent | Use a compliant carrier or move the trip; do not force the animal into unsafe containment |
| Destination document is questioned | Destination authority and airline | Obtain the current official record; a pet-fare receipt is not border evidence |
| Behavior makes boarding unsafe | Airline staff | Follow the written disposition and rebook only after the animal can meet the cabin conditions |
Keep government entry rules outside the airline column
Southwest decides carriage; the destination authority decides admission. Check vaccinations, certificates, permits, and return rules through the relevant government route and organize them with the pet health-certificate guide. An airline reservation does not establish that a state, territory, or other authority will admit the animal, and a valid health document does not create cabin capacity.
Revalidate the trip after any operational change
Compare the latest itinerary with the saved version 72 hours before travel and again on the day of departure. A new flight, operator, airport, or assigned seat can change the under-seat and capacity analysis even when the destination stays the same. Call again when the pet entry is absent or ambiguous. Preserve the updated confirmation rather than relying on a prior agent’s verbal assurance for a superseded flight.
A Southwest pet reservation and paid fare show airline acceptance for the confirmed eligible itinerary. They do not guarantee border entry, carrier fit after an aircraft change, or boarding when containment or behavior conditions are not met.
