Lufthansa Pet Policy: Cabin and Hold Checks

Lufthansa separates pets into three products: an eligible small cat or dog in the cabin, an accepted cat or dog as excess baggage in the hold, or air freight through Lufthansa Cargo when passenger-baggage carriage does not fit. Use the current travelling-with-animals hub to choose the branch for the exact Lufthansa-operated segment, then obtain a confirmation before relying on the flight.

Official routes checked August 26, 2026: Lufthansa, Lufthansa, Lufthansa. Reopen the current Lufthansa, Lufthansa, Lufthansa material against the operating flight and travel date because acceptance, aircraft, fees, embargoes, and border rules can change.

Choose one transport branch from real measurements

Proposed branchEvidence that supports itReason to move branches
CabinEligible cat/dog, carrier and animal within the live combined limit, under-seat fit, permitted route/cabinFit, weight, route, or operating-carrier rule fails
Passenger holdEligible cat/dog, accepted rigid container, aircraft/connection availability, breed permittedContainer, breed, destination, transfer, or aircraft restriction fails
Air freightCargo acceptance and forwarder/terminal planPet is unaccompanied, other species, country requires freight, or baggage service is unavailable

Do not begin with the fee table. Record the animal’s species, breed, age, measurements, weight, container dimensions and weight, every operating flight, route, cabin, and connection. Those inputs decide whether a service is possible. Pricing matters only after the correct product has been identified.

For cabin travel, test fit and confirmation separately

The Lufthansa cabin page currently describes a soft-sided, securely closable carrier, a maximum total size and combined animal/carrier weight, and enough internal room for natural standing, lying, and turning. Copy the live values into your dated worksheet, because product limits and route exceptions can change. Test the fully loaded carrier without crushing it to create artificial clearance.

  • Confirm the segment is operated by Lufthansa and that the booked cabin has usable under-seat space.
  • Register each pet through the instructed channel and save the confirmation response.
  • Print the current cabin animal form in the number Lufthansa requires and complete it without altering the wording.
  • Keep official veterinary and entry documents with the passenger rather than attached where they can be lost.
  • Collect the boarding pass at the airport counter as instructed and be ready for final carrier review.

Use the under-seat carrier worksheet for the measurements. A successful online registration is not proof that the animal can stand and turn in the closed carrier, and a correctly sized bag is not a booking confirmation.

For hold travel, validate the container against the current rule date

The Lufthansa excess-baggage hold page requires a current IATA-compliant container and publishes route and connection limitations. It also states additional ventilation-opening requirements effective May 4, 2026. If a crate was bought or used earlier, audit it against the current page rather than assuming grandfathered acceptance.

  1. Measure the animal in a natural standing position and select a container that permits normal posture and turning.
  2. Inspect ventilation openings, door hardware, fasteners, bowls, floor, wheels, handles, and spacer construction.
  3. Check the breed restrictions before requesting space, especially for snub-nosed animals and regulated fighting-dog breeds.
  4. Submit the hold registration for the exact operated flight and wait for the email acceptance result.
  5. Recheck the container and route after an aircraft, connection, or departure-airport change.

Treat Munich and other connections as routing constraints

Lufthansa’s current hold material warns that animals cannot be accepted in the hold on connecting itineraries through Munich under the stated conditions, while routing through Frankfurt can follow a different rule. Enter the connection airport and duration in the decision, not merely the origin and destination. A booking engine can sell a passenger connection that does not support through carriage of the animal.

Handle USA dog routes as a separate gate

Lufthansa publishes special registration and destination limitations for dogs traveling to the United States and points travelers to the CDC Dog Import Form. Check whether the dog’s route is accepted before booking, complete the government step through the live CDC route, and retain the submission receipt. Do not generalize a confirmed cat trip or a non-U.S. dog trip to this branch.

The pet-document separation guide helps keep airline forms apart from government permits and health records. Airline confirmation cannot waive a CDC, export, transit, or destination rule.

Register early, then verify the response state

The Lufthansa hub publishes different timing channels for ordinary and USA routes and recommends early registration because allocation is limited. Store the submitted request, the airline’s accepted or declined response, the flight details covered, and the deadline that applied when checked. If the response says the request was received but does not state acceptance, leave the service pending.

A pet registration form is an application for space. The executable record is Lufthansa’s confirmation for the exact animal, product, operating flight, and route.

Reconcile border permission with both directions

Check origin export, transit, destination entry, and return requirements independently. Match the microchip or other identifier across vaccination, health, test, and permit records. Recalculate validity windows after any itinerary change. A container accepted for the outbound flight may still face a different return route, authority, airport, or operating carrier.
